Blur ready to say goodbye to the scenes?
Is it possible that the one held during the second weekend of the Coachella Festival yesterday evening, Saturday 20 April, was the last concert in Blur's history? According to what the leader of the British team said directly to the public, the possibility is more than concrete. Shortly before performing “Tender”, the first extract from the band's sixth album, “13” from 1999, the singer and co-founder of Gorillaz declared into the microphone: “In the spirit of clarity and truth, this is probably the our last concert.”
It's possible that Albarn's was an ironic joke to be linked to what happened during the first weekend of the festival? It cannot be ruled out. As the New Musical Express recalls, however, it must be remembered that the artist had already raised the possibility of putting Blur on hold last December.
“It's time to end this tour,” the frontman declared to the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles: “It's too much for me. It was the right thing to do and a huge honor to play these songs again, spend time with the guys, make an album etc etc. I'm not saying I won't do it again, it was a wonderful success, but I'm not fixated on the past.”
The commitments of the other members of the band could also get in the way: guitarist Graham Coxon plans to release a record with his project The Waeve, shared with former Pipettes Rose Elinor Dougall. Drummer Dave Rowntree is instead a candidate in the next British general elections among the ranks of the Labor Party in Mid Sussex, with the prospect – if elected – of being able to become the first MP from the progressive coalition to be elected in the history of the district.
