Wayne Coyne’s memorable first meeting with Paul McCartney

The frontman of Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne in a recent interview with the British newspaper The Guardian he told of a time he had an unforgettable experience with Paul McCartney.

This is the anecdote Coyne told that supposedly happened in 1993: “The first time we met Paul McCartney, he wasn’t there to meet us, he was at one of these festivals, he came backstage.

Nobody knew it was there. He entered with his wife, Linda, and I followed him onto the stage. He thought I was part of his entourage and apparently didn’t care that I was there. But I was right behind him as he watched Neil Young play. I had already seen Neil Young play, more than anything I was there to watch Paul McCartney.”

While Wayne Coyne he was staring at one of his idols and couldn’t help but notice something peculiar. “I remember he had a very crusty ear. I mean, I was just looking at Paul McCartney as a human being. It’s not very often that I do that. I remember looking at his ear, and sometimes when you travel a lot, your ears are a little encrusted”.

As Coyne stared at the crusted ear of Paul McCartneythe former Beatles he turned towards him and spoke to him, or rather offered him a joint. “I don’t smoke weed, he had a big joint, he gave it to me like I was part of his entourage. I took a big hit, which I shouldn’t have done, but I thought, ‘Well, how often do you smoke one joint with Paul McCartney?’ It was fantastic.”
