Vasco Rossi remembers Pino Daniele: “Both musically rebellious”
Among the many testimonies present in the book “Con Pino ten years later” by Antonio Tricomi and Gianni Valentino (which La Repubblica offers free on newsstands) there is also that of Vasco Rossi. Il Blasco dedicated a post to the great Neapolitan singer-songwriter, who passed away ten years ago, with the testimony contained in the volume:
Actually, if I think about it, Pino and I have a lot in common. We are both musically rebels, children of the seventies who belonged to committed singer-songwriters. We were the new in the music scene, those of the turning point with the past. The word singer-songwriter wasn’t enough for us. We had our work cut out for us: I was making rock credible in Italian and he was revolutionizing the Neapolitan musical tradition by contaminating it with jazz and above all with blues, also claiming the fact of having been the first.
We had had enough of political commitment. Our themes were more personal and/or socially relevant. We had many themes in common: marginalization, for example, which we had both experienced, for better or worse. By the way, there’s a song of his that I really like, Je so’ Crazy. Well, it’s one of the ones I could have written.
Then the memory continues and we start again with a question:
– Then in 1993, for your album Gli Spari Sopra, you invited Pino to actually collaborate on the song Hai massimo tu. What do you remember about those sessions, and why did you want his presence on guitar?
I once had a wonderful meeting with Dave Stewart (together with Annie Lennox he makes up the synth-pop duo Eurythmics), who knew very well who I was and showed me his respect by writing the music for You’re Right. Think what a story. Pino had jumped at the invitation to join us in a very natural way. I don’t remember the day or year we met in person. Pino has always been there for me. What does time matter? When I first met him it was as if we had known each other forever. A mutual feeling. We recognized each other instantly.
