Tyka Nelson, Prince’s sister, has died at 64
Tyka Nelsonthe sister of Prince and in turn a singer, she died on November 4, her son, President Nelson, broke the news to the Minnesota Star Tribune.
His health condition had worsened after he canceled his farewell concert in New York in June. The causes of death were not disclosed.
Tyka’s stepsister, Sharon Nelsonstated, “He had his own head. He’s in a better place.” His cousin, Charles “Chazz” Smithwrote on Facebook: “Our family is very saddened to share the news of my cousin Tyka Evene Nelson who passed away this morning.”
Tyka released four albums between 1988 and 2011 and reached No. 33 on the Billboard Hot R’n’B/Hip-Hop chart in 1988 with “Marc Anthony’s Tune.”
Before his passing, he had intended to publish a memoir about his life. Music icon Prince died on April 21, 2016, at age 57, of an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park home in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
A few days earlier, on April 14, Prince had held his last concert in Atlanta, but the next morning, during the return flight, his private jet had to make an emergency landing after he was knocked unconscious.
Tyka spoke to him not long after the health issue, which he dismissed as dehydration, but little did he know that would be the last time he would see his brother.
She tried to convince the “Purple Rain” hitmaker to take care of her health, but she said he avoided the questions. She told the Star Tribune: “A couple of times I said to him, ‘How are you really?’ He didn’t elaborate on anything with me. That worried me, and he knew it did… but that’s all he wanted to tell me.” .
In fact, Prince didn’t say much during what would be their last conversation. She recalled that: “He kept avoiding questions. “I kept getting angry. I was like, “Talk to me for two seconds.” He would change the subject, make a joke and then we would both laugh.” However, he was keen to connect with Sharon, with whom Tyka only became involved after Prince’s death eight years ago.
Tyka said: “He asked me to find out more information about our family. Prince wanted me to find his stepsister Sharon’s number. He was like, ‘Send this photo to that person.’ ‘Okay. What for?'”
