Toto: “As a band we have never played with Rob Lowe”

On the Jan. 9 episode of his podcast “Literally,” the actor Rob Lowe (“The Boys on 56th Street,” “Austin Powers 1 & 2,” “Contact,” “Sex Tape” among many films) casually mentioned that Bill Simmons, executive producer of HBO’s “Yacht Rock” documentary, having considered the possibility of moving from acting to music. ”

“There was a point in the ’80s when I was definitely getting ‘too much Bolivian marching powder’ and going fucking crazy,” Lowe recalled. “I was at that point in a young actor’s career. where you’re too old to play the roles you’ve done so far, but too young for the ones that will last you the rest of your life, which are the really great ones.”

“I love music so much,” he continued, “that I got it into my head that maybe I should think about music more. And I cut a demo with the Toto.

Lowe’s comment did not go unnoticed and attracted attention, with many fans wondering how his collaboration with Toto came about. The UCR website then contacted the band for comment and Toto spokesperson Steve Karas provided some clarification.

“Toto as a band has never done a session with Rob Lowe,” he explained, adding that the guitarist Steve Lukether was caught off guard by the sudden attention to Lowe’s story.

“The news is not accurate.” According to Toto’s spokesperson, Lowe spent an afternoon in the studio with only two band membersDavid Paich and Steve Porcaro. All the musicians in Toto have an impressive CV as session men, having played with some of the biggest names in music. Paich and Porcaro were working on a project outside the band when a producer suggested they try Lowe behind the microphone. The venture proved unsuccessful and a true collaboration never took shape. Although absent on that occasion, Lukather, through his publicist, confirmed that he spent time with Lowe “once in 1985 in Japan and has not seen him since.”
