Taylor Swift: mother asked for and obtained escort in London

The British Labor government finds itself in an embarrassing situation due to the granting of an armed escort to Taylor Swift during his concerts in London, a decision that raised controversy, as such security measures are normally reserved for high-ranking figures, such as ministers or members of the royal family.

The request for the escort, as reported by Corriere della Sera, appeared on the table after the American singer had canceled some concerts in Vienna due to a concrete threat of attack (with the arrest of the alleged attacker) and after a tragic event in which three little girls were killed in a crime linked to a themed party dedicated to the singer, causing racial unrest in England.

Taylor Swift’s mother, who is also her manager, has requested armed protection for her daughter. A request that the British authorities initially refused, arguing that such protection is reserved only for foreign heads of state. However, after the mother threatened to cancel her planned concerts in London if an adequate escort was not provided, the situation attracted the attention of senior political figures, including Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and the mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

Due to the doubts of Scotland Yard, which independently manages security in the capital, a legal opinion was requested which gave the green light to the escort for the singer.

News of the protection was subsequently reported by the media, sparking a political scandal, as many perceived the situation as an example of a government allowing itself to be blackmailed by a celebrity’s mother and using public resources to ensure the safety of a pop star.

Furthermore, both Minister Cooper, Mayor Khan and Prime Minister Keir Starmer received free tickets to Swift’s concerts, generating further controversy. The Conservative opposition demanded an explanation in Parliament, but both the government and the mayor insisted that the final decision on the escort was made independently by Scotland Yard, although Khan admitted there had been discussions about how to ensure the singer’s safety.
