Snoop Dogg reinterprets a Tom Petty song in his new album
He went out “Missionaries” the new album by Snoop Dogg. The album contains a cameo from the late (2017) Tom Petty in one of his songs, “Last Dance With Mary Jane“. In the version on the album the original Heartbreakers song includes a different lyric performed by Snoop and the other guest of the song, Jelly Roll.
Last month Snoop, whose name is probably one of the most associated with all things marijuana, described his cover of Petty as a “song about weed.” But according to what is written in “Conversations With Tom Petty,” the 2005 book by Paul Zollo, was not what the author originally had in mind when he wrote “Last Dance With Mary Jane.” Or at least he was pretty sure that wasn’t the case. “I don’t think I was writing about weed. I think it was just a girl’s name. I can’t imagine that I would write a song about weed. I don’t think there’s enough to write about,” Petty said, laughing, as reported in the book.
Other guests on the album include Stingwhich appears on a song titled “Another Part of Me” (Read here), 50 Cent and the producer of the LP, Dr. Drewho worked with Snoop on his debut album “Doggystyle” in 1994.
“We’re still in love with what we do. I’m peaking right now and Dr. Dre sees it,” Snoop said in a recent press release. “He brings out the best in me because he pays attention to everything I say, the way I say it, the fucking music and the concept of the songs.”
