Rumo: “We lost ourselves” is a magical and raw labyrinth
Magical realism of the provincial and hallucination, landscape and trauma, spirituality and chronicle. “Lore” It is a pounding beginning, “Shahrazad” it is a more soft piece but on a thematic level it brings the listener inside social loss in which we live, “Cursed”especially in the refit, seems to be spit out of one of the best Izi records. “Storage rings” It is an anomalous love song, “House of Spertri” follows that more deep mood. The ending: “On my skin” and “we lost ourselves” These are two different traces, but in both there is the awareness of having to be the masters of one’s own destiny in order to really change things. They are all pieces of a journey, the one created and imagined by Rumo, rapper and producer from Friuli who published “We were lost”, for the storm record.
A labyrinthine, allegorical and mystical album, an both geographical and mental process, between tanks and hallucinogens, lost friends and a tormented love. The project is written very well, it has a defined imagination and the songs could really be the soundtrack of a movie: opens on vast geographical and social views, with traces that sound like battle hymns, and then gradually curl up in the intimacy of ballads that sing friendships and loves. Rivers, woods, polygons and moors are the backdrop to the author’s life and his deepest traumas. Folklore figures, film characters, childhood friends mix in a lucid dream. The title “We lost ourselves” reveals the concept of the album, declined in two facets. The first is that of the loss of rumo and his friends, who wander without a defined destination. The second is the loss of ties: Whether in love or friendship, the relationships told on the album break. Many songs have a choral dimension. Rumo speaks of “us” rather than “I”, telling many episodes that and his friends as protagonists have And suggesting that not all friendships are easy to live, or destined to last forever. By listening to the disc in order, we also witness the birth, development and end of A love story between rumo and a girl.
One of the recurring symbols is that of insects: mantids, chrysalides, metamorphosis and flies make it clear from the title. This symbol has two different values: on the one hand, insects are a tiny but unstoppable force, on the other they are a metaphor for transformation and change. Another recurring theme is that of the stories. Stories are the way we make sense of chaos: telling and sharing them creates bonds, gives meaning to experiences and builds community. In the songs there are often references to symptoms or episodes related to mental health: the intrusive thoughts and the paranoia of the anxiety disorder, the relationship with food, the visions caused by the persistent difficulty of hallucinogen perception. The disc, while addressing universal issues, It is strongly linked to the territory. Rumo contrasts the wild nature of his land, Friuli, to the contaminations caused by man and his greed, referring in particular to the cumulles of asbestos, to the remaining of bullets and explosives and to the tanks that are found on the Natura 2000 website of the Magredi. “We lost ourselves” was registered entirely at Mushroom Studio. Most of the disk productions are rumo, with the intervention of Pooli, a Friulian producer, in five tracks.
