William Orbit: No "Ray of Light 2" for Madonna

Madonna, the “Confessions II” “film” (don’t call it a video)

Madonna’s impressive launch campaign continues for the second chapter of “Confessions on the dancefloor”, arriving in July. After a surprise concert in Times Square in recent days, Madonna presented a short film featuring six songs from the new album. It has a running time of about 13 minutes, debuted on June 4 at the Tribeca Festival and was directed by David Toro and Solomon Chase, who work together under the name TORSO. It includes the previously released singles “I Feel So Free” and “Bring Your Love”, the duet with Sabrina Carpenter, as well as four previously unreleased songs: “Good for the Soul”, “One Step Away”, “Danceteria” and “Read My Lips”. Numerous guests also appear in the film, including Sabrina Carpenter, actress Benedict Cumberbatch, DJ Honey Dijon, Kate Moss and Lourdes Leon, the singer’s daughter.

It is defined as a “film” because, Madonna explains. “I like the idea of cinema, because I am a cinephile and cinema has inspired a good part of my life,” explained the artist. “Somehow the word ‘video’ seems cheap. It was fine when it was just MTV and me.”

“Confessions II” arrives twenty years after “Confessions on a Dance Floor”: The first chapter, released in 2005 and was one of her most explicitly dance albums, as well as one of the most celebrated albums of Madonna’s career.
