Rufus Thomas, the king of Memphis (and Porretta Terme)

On December 15, 2001 he died in Memphis – and where else if not there, in the city whose musical essence he represented – at the age of 84, Rufus Thomas. Sun and Stax were his music labels. Soul, Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Funk, his reference genres. He was a DJ and entertainer, author and actor. An absolute giant. A musician celebrated not only in Memphis, but also in our area: precisely in the municipality of Porretta Terme, in the province of Bologna, where the annual Porretta Soul Festival takes place (in 2025 it will celebrate its 37th year and will take place from 24 to 27 July ), the park where the event is held was named after him.
