Lacuna Coil, “Enjoy the silence” and Depeche Mode’s reaction

Engaged in the promotion of their new and tenth studio album, entitled “Sleepless empire” And out next February 14thmore than five years after their previous unreleased project, “Black anima” in 2019 (here is our review), Lacuna Coil released a video interview with “Metal Hammer” in which they reflected on a crucial moment for their career coincided with the publication of the cover of “Enjoy the Silence” of the Depeche Mode.

The Milanese metal band released their own version of the classic by Dave Gahan and associates in their fourth studio work “Karmacode” from 2006. The reinterpretation of the song, originally published by the British band on the album “Violator” from 1990gave one notable push to the team led by Cristina Scabbia in terms of popularityso much so that it came to the attention of Gahan himself.

Speaking to “Metal Hammer” about the five songs that they say define their career, Linkin Park chose their cover of “Enjoy the Silence” as the single that brought them to the attention of the general public. During the chat Cristina revealed that it was her idea to try to reread the Depeche Mode song and explained: “It all started with me because I love Depeche Mode. We were thinking about some covers that we wanted to try. I remember that Marco Coti Zelatiour bass player who writes most of the music, he didn’t really agree He was like, ‘I don’t know if this is a good idea,’ but then he transformed it in such a way that it’s like it became one of our songs.”

He added:.

“It turned out so well that Depeche Mode even liked it! So much so that they gave us permission to make the video.”

In a 2009 interview for “ZDF”, Dave Gahan had publicly supported the cover of Lacuna Coil and declared:

“Their performance left me genuinely impressed. It encapsulated the distinctive atmosphere that I always hoped someone would bring to us.”

Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro reacted to the appreciation received from the Depeche Mode frontman in a recent chat with “Metal Hammer”: “We’ve never met Dave Gahan yet!“, explained the two singers of the Milanese band: “We would like to meet him one day just to thank him for the inspiration.” Cristina added: “It would be a dream. We love you, Depeche Mode! We can’t wait to meet you!”.

Regarding the impact the cover of “Enjoy the Silence” had on Lacuna Coil’s popularity, Ferro stated: “It’s the song that took us out of the metal scene niche. Up until that point we were known among followers of the metal scene, but ‘Enjoy the Silence’ is the song that everyone knows, even those who are not particularly interested in metal.” He continued:

“It was on all the TV channels: MTV played it a lot, and not just on ‘Headbangers Ball’. Many radio stations, even in Italy and even those that normally only broadcast pop music, broadcast the song. It’s the song that allowed us to make us truly known on a large scale.”
