Joni Mitchell: a collection of jazz music comes out in September

Joni Mitchell announced the release of a collection of jazz music. The mega-box of 61 tracks is simply entitled “Joni’s Jazz” and will be released on September 5 in 4 CD or 8 LP format. The physical editions will be accompanied by the cover notes, photographs and some Oigiginal art works by Mitchell. The 81 -year -old icon of the US songwriter had not published a disc for two years: the last had been, in 2023, the live “Joni Mitchell at Newport”, or the recording of the concert that the previous year marked the return of Joni Mitchell on stage for the first time after the brain aneurysm that in 2015, and the collection “Archives – Volume Three: The Asylum Yaars (1972-1975) “.

An anticipation of the box has already been widespread: it is a demo of “Be Cool”, taken from the album “Wild Things Run Fast” of 1982. You can listen to it below:

“Joni’s Jazz” – reads the press release – “will retrace the long love story of Mitchell with the genre that gives the title to the album”, from its 1968 debut with “Song to a Seagull” until its performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 2022. The 61 tracks include rare and unpublished live recordings, demo and alternative versions.

Joni Mitchell decided to dedicate “Joni’s Jazz” to Wayne Shorter: “It was a pleasure to play with him,” said the great missing jazzist. “We will miss it, but it will remain alive for me in this music.” The project includes Mitchell’s collaborations with Shorter, as well as those with the legends of Jazz Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock and Charles Mingus.
