In America they dote on Ella Langley

In Italy Ella Langley he is not yet a star, or at least not in the terms in which he has become one in the United States, where in recent months his name is everywhere: in the charts, on the radio, in increasingly bigger live shows. Overseas, above all, the singer-songwriter has transformed into one of the most evident phenomena of the new country scene. After the single “Choosin’ Texas“, the artist’s second album, “Dandelion”, released on April 10th, debuted directly at first place on the “Billboard 200”also taking the top spot in Canada and recording 169,000 equivalent units in its launch week. For Ella, this is a major achievement in her career and the highest figure of the year for a female country artist. These numbers are enough to explain why today the question is no longer whether Langley has arrived, but how can he stay there.

Who is Ella Langley: the success of “Choosin’ Texas”

Born in Alabama in 1999, raised among Baptist churches, informal jams and listens that mixed country, rock and folkElla Langley forged her own path away from the spotlight, moving through small venues and independent circuits before moving to Nashville and entering the writing community. The first steps were gradual, between self-produced singles, writing sessions and a publishing contract, until signing with a major label and the EP “Excuse the mess” in 2023. The real debut came with the album “Hungover” (2024), a record that it guaranteed her visibility and first radio appearances important, especially thanks to the duet with Riley Green on “You look like you love me“.

The leap, however, has a precise title: “Choosin’ Texas“. Released as the lead single of the second album, the song – built on a classic country structure, with steel guitar and an immediate chorus – tells a simple and universal storythat of a love lost in favor of someone else, transforming it into a recognizable and singable tale. The song, released last October 17, reached number one on the “Billboard Hot 100”, remaining at the top for weeks, where it still is. At the same time, the song dominated the country charts, becoming one of the rare cases in which the genre manages to establish itself even in the broader mainstream. It is here that Langley stops being a promise and becomes a central figure, considering also that “Choosin’ Texas” allowed her to breaking the record previously held by Taylor Swift for most weeks at number one for a song by a female artist that also topped the Hot Country Songs chart.

“Making history among the women of country music”

Langley’s success is not only quantitative, but also symbolic. With “Dandelion” she achieved her first number one in the “Billboard 200”, consolidating a path that began with “Hungover”, which had already guaranteed her a solid audience base. But it is precisely “Choosin’ Texas” that has redefined her positioning, transforming her into a hitmaker capable of impacting the dynamics of a genre traditionally dominated by men.

The single simultaneously topped the Billboard, Hot 100, Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts, an unprecedented achievement for a woman in country, and held the top spot on the Hot Country Songs chart for 20 weeks, making it one of the longest-running songs ever. At the same time, Langley managed to occupy more high positions on the streaming and radio charts with other songs from the same albuma sign of an impact that goes beyond the single success. In a context in which country often remains a “boys club”, its rise represents a change in balance, rather than an isolated case. Building on the momentum of the opening hit, “Dandelion” also includes songs like “Loving life again” and “Be her”. The latter song, released as the album’s second single last month, reached No. 2 on the “Hot Country Songs,” just below “Choosin’ Texas,” making Langley the first woman to simultaneously occupy the top two positions of the ranking for multiple weeks, surpassing Beyoncé and Swiftwhich they had only managed for a week.

“Women are about to take it all”

“’Dandelion’ seems to me a more mature version of my artistic identity“, Langley said in a recent interview with “Billboard”. “I went into every writing session with a mood board and a reference playlist of 100 songs. Lots of references to Johnny Lee and Ronnie Milsap. Think of summer nights, fireflies, a lit bonfire. I love dancing – I grew up dancing, so I wanted something where, when I listen to the songs, I also pay attention to the instrumentation.”

The success of the last few months has led the artist to also reflect on the role of women in country music. When asked if she feels a responsibility towards emerging female artists, she replied without hesitation: “Absolutely yes, and there are so many talented women emerging now. I’m excited to see what music will be like in the next two or three years. Women are about to take it all, I tell you. It’s nice to hopefully be someone that others can look up to in this way”.
