Eric Clapton no longer thinks about retiring to private life

Eric Clapton’s pleasure when he came close to being JJ Cale

The inimitable career of Eric Clapton has been dotted with a long series of successes since, at a very young age, he appeared on the London music scene of the mid-1960s. Among the many songs he wrote, one of the simplest and quickest to write was “Lay Down Sally”later included on his fifth solo album in 1977 “Slowhand” (read the review here).

Clapton and the singer-songwriter
Marcy Levy
they wrote it relatively quickly, as Levy recalled. “One day we were in the studio and he said, ‘I want to write this song called ‘Lay Down Sally.’ the day and eventually Eric found the rhythm, I played the keyboards and we recorded the track.”

The now 72 year old
Marcy Levy
whose real name
Marcella Levy
he wrote the lyrics to the entire song that night, it was about someone trying to convince a girl not to leave and to stay with him. “Eric asked me, ‘Can you write a lyric at home tonight?’ So I did, and we recorded the vocals the next day.”

Eric Clapton
he admitted that when he wrote the song – ultimately signed not only by him and Levy, but also by the guitarist
George Terry
– he was less interested in what the song was about than in the idea of imitating the guitar style of one of his favorite musicians. Speaking about the song he explained that it was “the closest an Englishman could get to being JJ Cale”. The tribute to Cale was completed by the cover of
“Cocaine”
used as the B-side of the single
“Lay Down Sally”.
