What do Joni Mitchell and Princess Peach have in common?
If you follow the world of video games even casually, you know who Princess Peach is: one of the characters from the Nintendo world, the one that Super Mario saves in his first adventure, and who then became an active character herself. And you also know that a film related to that world is about to be released, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”, after the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” 3 years ago.
What does all this have to do with music? In the film, actress Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Chess” was the Netflix series that launched her) lends her voice to Princess Peach. And, it is said, she should play Joni Mitchell together with Meryl Streep in an upcoming biopic, which director Cameron Crowe (“Almost Famous”, “Jerry Maguire”), who is also a great friend of the singer-songwriter, has been working on for about four years.
No official confirmation yet. But someone thought to connect the dots, creating a scene that went viral: Anya Taylor-Joy was a guest on the US program “Today Show” for the launch of the Super Mario film, and the interviewer thought it best to ask her what the greatest American singer-songwriter and a video game character have in common.
We can see the great professionalism of the actress, who first repeats the question (almost in disbelief), then replies seriously:
“They’re both unique; you can’t touch them. They both play in their own league.”
The exchange went viral, with comments like “I hope as a follow-up question you asked him what the connection is between Bowser and Graham Nash,” bringing together the big bad and Mario’s nemesis, and the singer-songwriter Mitchell dated in the late ’60s, who dedicated “Our House” to her and from whom she separated.
Here, however, the difference is evident: Mitchell remained on good terms with Nash, and the same cannot be said of the protagonists of Super Mario with Bowser.
