1976, the year of birth of UK punk: the first singles
Although by convention it is considered that “New Rose” by the Damned is the first punk single officially released in Great Britain by a record label (thus excluding self-produced demos), the chronological record is by an Australian and non-English group, as you can see from the list below.
September 1976 I’m Stranded – The Saints (1976, UK press)
October 1976 New Rose – The Damned.
November 1976 Anarchy in the UK – Sex Pistols
November 1976 Teenage Depression – Eddie and the Hot Rods
January 1977 Boredom (EP Spiral scratch) – Buzzcocks
January 1977 (Get a) grip (on yourself) – Stranglers
but the contemporaries should also be remembered, even though they cannot be dated with precision:
Keys to Your Heart – The 101ers
We Vibrate – The Vibrators
