The sixth album by Yespublished in December 1973, “Tales From Topographic Oceans”will be the subject of a super deluxe edition consisting of 12 CDs plus a Blu-ray which will be released on February 6, 2026 by Rhino Records. The box set includes a remastered version of the original album on both CD and vinyl; rarity; previously unreleased studio and live recordings; and several new mixes of Steven Wilsonincluding a Dolby Atmos version.

The double album
“Tales From Topographic Oceans”
arrived in an artistically flourishing period for the English band. In the previous year and a half the group had released three albums:
“The Yes Album”
And
“Fragile”
in 1971 and
“Close To the Edge”
(

The press release states: “The origins of “Tales From Topographic Oceans” date back to a footnote in Paramahansa Yogananda’s ‘Autobiography of a Yogi,’ which inspired Jon Anderson to imagine a four-part musical journey through ancient Hindu scriptures. That concept took shape in four compositions, one on each side: “The Revealing Science Of God (Dance of the Dawn),” “The Remembering (High the Memory),” “The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun)” and “Ritual (Nous Sommes Du Soleil)”.

In a 2019 interview,
Jon Anderson
speaking about the record to Best Classic Bands, said: “When we went to Japan I started thinking, ‘Okay, FM in America is catching on. So we can do long songs. The doors are opening. Let’s do four 20-minute songs.’ And we did.”

To make the album

(guitar),
Chris Squire
(Bass),
Rick Wakeman
(keyboards) e
Alan White
(drums) worked with the producer

at Morgan Studios in London, using Britain’s first 24-track console.
“Tales from Topographic Oceans”
it reached the top of the album chart in the UK and number six in the US.

The Super Deluxe edition reveals deeper dimensions of the project with previously unreleased and in-progress versions of all four songs from the album. The set’s live material was recorded at the start of the ‘Tales’ tour and includes previously unreleased performances of all four songs from the album. Concerts were held in Zurich (21 April 1974), Manchester (28 November 1973) and Cardiff (1 December 1973).

Syd Schwartz
of Jazz & Coffee reports in the box set’s liner notes: “Consensus has never been the point. “Tales From Topographic Oceans” will continue to be debated, rejected, defended and rediscovered. Its resistance to easy categorization is not a failure: it’s the reason it endures. It is a vast, unknowable ocean of sound and spirit. And it hasn’t finished revealing itself yet.”

And he goes on to write: “Without ‘Tales’, there would be no ‘Relayer’ (the next Yes album released in 1974, ed.). No transition to leaner, clearer structures in the late ’70s. No map is drawn without first pushing the boundaries of the known world, and ‘Tales’ is where Yes did exactly that.”
