The unreleased single by Whitney Houston “Love is”. The song is contained in the new album “Whitney Houston: The Concert for a New South African (Durban)”which celebrates the 30th anniversary of the performance of the musician who passed away on 11 February 2012 in South Africa. The song was written by Carvin Winans and produced by Nat Adderley And Whitney Houston.
“Whitney is unquestionably the quintessential voice of her generation,” he states Dion SummersVice President of Music Programming at SiriusXM, who first heard the song 30 years ago – His songs continue to inspire, and SiriusXM is honored to once again celebrate his legacy with the exclusive U.S. premiere of “Love Is”. Through her extraordinary music and incredible spirit, Whitney Houston will always be with us.”
One morning in 1986 Carvin woke up in the early hours of the morning with a melody in his head and, sitting down at the piano, began to write the song. A few weeks later he went into the studio to produce the demo and sent it to his music publisher. The following year, Whitney surprised him with a visit to his home, where he listened for the first time “Love Is”. According to Carvin, Whitney immediately fell in love with the song and asked him to save it for her, because she wanted to record it. As promised, he kept it, and Whitney recorded it three years later, in September 1990.
After Whitney’s death, Sony Music contacted Carvin to create a remix of the original song, and so it was born “Love Is (Carvin Winans Remix)”included in the musical project “Whitney Houston: The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban)”which includes a recording of the performance made in 1994.
Carvin says “Love Is” is about how strong love can be if we put it into practice, and no one delivers that message more convincingly than the greatest singer of all time, Whitney Houston.
“Whitney said that Carvin was one of the most talented songwriters she had ever met, and she was happy to have had the opportunity to collaborate with him on this song,” she says Pat Houstonperformer of the Estate of Whitney E. Houston – This is a classic, soulful R&B song, with a simple, straight-from-the-heart message. She would be happy to know that this song has finally been released to the world.”
The live album features songs from that concert, including Whitney’s biggest hits, such as “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “How Will I Know,” “I Have Nothing,” “Greatest Love of All”, “I Will Always Love You” and other classics, such as “Amazing Grace” and his version of “Home” Of Charlie Smalls from the Broadway musical “The Wiz”.
