The worst Halftime Show of the Superbowl
Today it is one of the most anticipated and discussed musical events of the year: it is theHalftime Show of the Superbowl, the miniconcase in the interval of the NFL final, the American football championship. It is a relatively recent tradition: from ’67 – year of the first Superbowl – until 89 that space was mainly occupied by a show of Marching bands university.
But in 1990, together with a choir of children organized by Disney, a group performs: the New Kids on the block. Two years later, in 1993 Michael Jackson arrives: he is the first of a list of giants who made that space not only the most viewed musical event of the year, but also the most spectacular. In the 90s, Country singers alternate, Latin music star (Gloria Estefan) and black music (Diana Ross), and gradually the bar rises more and more.
It does not always work, because over the years we have seen great shows, but also epic failfrom Janet Jackson’s “Wardrobe Malfunction” to Trash that you can’t, to artists who were simply not suitable for that stage.
Waiting for that of this night (it will be up to The Weeknd) we have chosen the 5 worst Halftime Show. In this other article, however, the 5 most successful Halftime Show.
The Black Eyed Peas (2011)
After a sequence of show rock (Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Who) returns to pop: but this is one of the ugliest and most trash things that can happen to you to see. I don’t know where to start: the voices that each go on their own, Fergie who starts with the microphone off, the illuminated costumes of the group and the figures … indeed not: the award goes to the rereading of “Sweet Child or ‘Mine” With Slash: Fergie that uvulates and imitates the way of dancing Axl Rose is one of the worst covers of all time.
Coldplay (2016)
Some artists are simply not suitable for that type of situation. A great love for Coldplay is clear: do they have a crazy repertoire, when you start “Vida la vida” how do you not put you to keep the time? But Chris Martin without the mega special effects that the band has live is struggling to keep that stage. The difference is evident when Bruno Mars and Beyonce arrive – called because it was thought that the band alone would not have been enough. The two devour the scene, while when Martin is again alone and sits on the floor, he needs help again: a assembly starts with the voice of Springsteen and the repertoire images of the past superbowls. Of course: the version of “fix you” (what a song …) is beautiful, with quotes from U2 and Prince. But the whole whole is a big boh.
Janet Jackson (2004)
Probably the most famous, for the “Wardrobe Malfunction”. During the performance with Justin Timberlake – Janet Jackson’s breast is already very explicit, framed in a live worldwide and seen by hundreds of thousands of people. Open Heaven: Non -finish controversy, Jackson who risks his career. From the next year, for some time, the show goes slightly deferred and only rock bands are chosen.
The show in itself is not much, and it will only be remembered for this.
The pop will return with the Black Eyed Peas, and the controversies in 2012 with Madonna – When my guest shows the middle finger: the NFL will apologize and the singer will have to negotiate compensation.
Maroon 5 and Travis Scott (2019)
In 2019 it is difficult to find an important name: we are in the middle of the controversy between players and the league, accused of racism. Colin Kaepernick began to kneel during the American anthem to protest the police violence against African Americans and in fact it is boycotted and expelled from the NFL: it will no longer find a engagement.
This is how Maroon 5 are used, helped by the cardboard Sponge Bob (really) and Travis Scott: the mockery in the mockery, a color artist called to support a white band, in the middle of a controversy over racism. The artists were criticized both for accepting the NFL engagement at this stage and for the show, decidedly undertone.
The Blues Brothers, Izz Top, James Brown (1997)
The Halftime Show have often had a theme: in 1997 it is a celebration of the Blues Brothers. It is basically a spot for the “Blues Brothers 2000” sequel, which will be released the following year.
The show opens with a fake report of Elwood Blues’s escape from prison.
Then they come to them: Dan Akroyd is clearly in playback, Belushi mind is replaced by Jim Belushi and John Goodman. James Brown sings on a kind of elevation that rises and lowers. Then the Izz Top arrive, who with the Blues Brothers has little and nothing to do with it, while a procession of motorcyclists take place on the field who break in time on “Gimme Some Lovin ‘”, and the level of embarrassment still increases. During the rehearsals, a stuntwoman died during a passage of bungee jumping then removed.
