The Smiths: A Mural for the Band’s Bassist Andy Rourke
Mike Joycethe drummer of the famous band The Smithshas announced the creation of a mural in Manchester in honour of Andy Rourkethe band’s bassist who passed away last year at the age of 59 due to pancreatic cancer.
The mural will be based on a famous photograph taken in 1985 during a concert at the Caird Hall in Dundee, Scotland and will be created by the artist Axeknown for creating a portrait of David Bowie on a pub wall in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.
In September, Joyce launched a crowdfunding campaign through her social media channels to fund the mural and secure the necessary permits for a permanent installation.
He also announced that any funds raised over the £15,500 target would be donated to the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with over £20,000 raised, allowing the mural to go ahead with its installation in Manchester.
The work is scheduled for November, which is also Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
This project not only celebrates the memory of Andy Rourke, but also contributes to an important cause related to the fight against cancer.
