The Sex Pistols reinterpreted by Guns N’ Roses, for the first time live
Continue the world tour by Guns N’ Roses among surprises, rarities and covers. After the restart of the tour in Mexico, which hosted the show with “Bad apples“After 35 years, the band has moved on in Brazilwhere last April 18 in Fortaleza found a way to surprise the audience once again.
About halfway through the show at the Arena Castelão in Fortaleza, Guns N’ Roses decided to give the fans present a more unique than rare moment. In fact, the group performed its cover of the rare song by the band for the first time live Sex Pistols. The microphone passed from Axl Rose to Duff McKaganand the band proposed “Black leather”.
The song in question, originally written by Steve Jones and Paul Cookwas recorded by these two between May and July 1978, after John Lydon, also known as Johnny Rotten, left the Sex Pistols. The song, as well as “Here we go again”, was recorded together with a series of songs included in the soundtrack album of a then still unfinished film about the Pistols, “The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle” in 1979. Although not made into the feature film, “Black leather” and “Here we go again” were both later released on a 7-inch single as part of the “Pistols Pack” collection, as well as on the Japanese LP “The Very Best Of Sex Pistols” in December 1979.
The first version of “Black Leather” to see the light was in fact the one recorded by the Runaways for their fourth studio album “And Now… The Runaways”, initially released in Europe in November 1978. Years later, Guns N’ Roses also recorded their cover of the song for the album “The Spaghetti Incident?” of 1993with Axl Rose on vocals – instead of McKagan as happened last April 18th in Fortaleza.
In South America the Guns N’ Roses tour still includes two dates, before two concerts in Hollywood and the eleven dates in Europe (Italy excluded). The band will then return to North America.
