The one on Liberato will be a different documentary film than usual (hopefully)

Not only for his way of interacting with fans in a surprising and surprising way, which has always represented his stylistic signature. Liberato points to break the classic patterns of promotion also on the docufilm side. If for some years now musical documentaries on the lives of artists have been multiplying, but more often than not they are visually and content-wise fragile projects, which have no real narrative or in-depth purpose and simply act as yet another marketing tool, a phenomenon that we have photographed here, the mysterious Neapolitan artist chooses to ride the trend but to do it in his own way.

The .May 9tha non-random date (“Nove maggio” was the title of the single that Liberato's name began to circulate in February 2017), will be released in cinemas “Liberato's secret”: not a docu-film like any other, but a different project than usual, at least in Italy. It is in fact an animated film that will bring to the big screen the world of voice which in recent years has allowed the Neapolitan scene to conquer the international public, also arriving on the stages of very prestigious festivals such as Primavera Sound in Barcelona or at the FioreVerde Fesival Paris. If abroad i Beatles set the tone in 1968 with their “Yellow Submarine“, almost fifty years before “Montage of Heck” by Brett Morgen on the history of Kurt CobainItaly has so far remained a bit idle.

The announcement arrived today via social media, with a post – published at 9.05am – which revealed the film's poster. There direction and of Francesco Lettieri, already behind the camera for the videos, iconic in their own way, of the artist's hits, from that of the same “Nove maggio” to that of “Niente”, passing through “Je te amo bene assaje” and “Tu t'e scurdat' 'and me”. He will lend the voices to the characters himself Set free and the actors Simona Tabasco And Nando Paoneboth Neapolitans.

Tabasco, born in 1994, is known to most for her role as Lucia in the second season of the American TV series “The White Lotus”, for which she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for best cast in a drama series and received the nomination for the Emmy Award – the “Oscars of TV” – in the best supporting actress in a drama series section. At the cinema she was directed by – among others – Edoardo De Angelis in “Perez” (2014) and Daniele Luchetti in “Lacci” (2020), while on TV she also acted in “I bastardi di Pizzofalcone”, “1994” and “Doc – In your hands”. .She appeared in three music videos: those of “Rose viola” by Ghemon, “Vento del sud” by Tiromancino and “Furore” by Paola & Chiara. Paone, born in 1956, during his fifty-year career has been directed by Dino Risi, Mario Monicelli, Matteo Carrone, Pietro Castellitto and – in the theater – by Eduardo De Filippo and Vincenzo Salemme, acting alongside Vittorio Gassman, Bud Spencer, Lino Banfi.

The film, produced by Red Private, at least on paper seems like an interesting operation. The animations were handled by the company Ilbe AnimationItalian excellence already behind the animated web series “Arctic Friends”, spin off of the American animated film “Arctic Dogs” (with the voices of Stefano De Martino, Stefano Fresi, Vinicio Marchioni and Ambra Angiolini). The characters were designed by the Roman illustrator, cartoonist and animator Lorenzo Ceccottiknown by the pseudonym of LRNZ Born in 1976, Ceccotti is one of the most versatile and successful Italian designers, who during his career so far has explored every aspect of graphic creativity: from video games to illustration, from comics (the “Orfani” series was a success) to cartoons animated.

In parallel to his activity as a cartoonist and illustrator, Ceccotti has also been carrying out a musical project for years, .Buromaschinen, with which he made his way among the followers of the Roman electronic scene (you can listen to his productions on Bandcamp). The sound design was instead handled by Antonio GiannantonioThe record company that launched Calcutta before the Latina singer-songwriter became a pop phenomenon with “Cosa ti manchi a fare”. Founder of the independent Roman label Geograph Records, in 2012 Giannantonio released the very first album of the future indie hero, “Forse…”, which is now unobtainable.

The music bears the signature, of course, of Liberato, but It is not known at the moment whether the soundtrack will recover the songs already published or whether, instead, it will contain unreleased songs of the mysterious Neapolitan artist. Liberato's calendar currently includes only one concert, in 2024: on August 9th the voice of “Nove Maggio” will perform on the stage of the Sziget Festival in Budapestone of the most followed and anticipated European summer events.
