Sanremo 2024: the Critics' Award goes to Loredana Berté

That beatshirt by Fabrizio De André who saved Loredana Berté

What is the link between Fabrizio De André and Loredana Berté? To understand some of the deepest aspects we must return to “a combat boss”, Berté’s unforgettable album released in 1997. This is her first project released after the death of her sister Mia Martini in 1995, and to her entirely dedicated and therefore strongly autobiographical. All the songs, except “L’Esodo” and “Father truly”, bring the signature of Berté. Inside there are masterpiece songs such as “Luna”, presented at the Sanremo Festival, and “Zone Friday”. The latter is also a song that enters the bowels because he remembers the farewell of his sister with the verses of rare beauty: “How beautiful is the life sitting there, one evening out of Friday. And how beautiful life is, one evening of May that holds the heart, which prevents the passage also for pain”.

But why was De André so important for “a combat breastplate”? To remember him was Berté herself in an interview in which she explained: “Mimì I always feel it with me and it is not true that time erases the pain, indeed it increases it. It is as if it had happened yesterday. He closed me in the house. Years to look at a ceiling. I went out thanks to Fabrizio. I was continuously listening to ‘the Sunday of the corpses’ – Berté continued – and I decided to ask him for permission to use his verse that he should have given the title to the album, ‘a fighting bibs’ in fact. I passed from Dori Ghezzi, fantastic friend. “Ghezzi was sincere and said to her:” If Fabrizio likes the album you will have the ok, otherwise … “. De André listened to the songs, on some he was moved and called Loredana immediately saying” is a beautiful album, you have my blessing “. And not only that, in that period, the Genoese singer -songwriter repeated several times that she was the only Italian singer -songwriter worthy of note in that historic moment. Thus was born “a combat boss” who, despite some troubled judicial events, has never lost his charge and depth: it is an album still essential today to understand the path and emotional strength of one of the greatest artists of Italian music. And it also reminds us that a “yes”, said by the heart and at the right time, can be saving.
