Serj Tankian believes in a new System Of A Down album
THE System of a Down they haven’t released an album since 2005’s “Hypnotize.” They went on a four-year hiatus the following year, reuniting in 2010 with a series of occasional tours. Also because the 57-year-old frontman Serj Tankianstepped away from touring for “artistic and health reasons.” However, he thinks that new music could come from the band in the future.
This is what the singer of Armenian origins declared to the British newspaper The Sun: “I would say that if System decided to make a record, it would be a new beginning, a completely new way, in a new beautiful direction.” “We have some unreleased material from the past that’s ready. I forget how many songs there are, but it’s a handful that would be interesting even on an archival level, because I think some of them are really incredible gems.”
Serj then reiterated that, even if he doesn’t want to commit to a “structured” tour, he is happy to play occasionally. He added: “I’ve stopped doing full tours for a combination of artistic and health reasons. But individual shows as events have been incredibly rewarding for us. We’re really enjoying ourselves and enjoying each other in the process and it’s becoming special.”
In 2024, System Of A Down performed only two concerts: one, on April 27, in Las Vegas at the Sick New World Festival (where they also played their only concert of 2023) and the other on August 17 in San Francisco.
Some time ago Serj had admitted that he would have been happy for System Of A Down to replace him with another singer in order to continue the tour. During an appearance on the “Broken Record” podcast, Serj explained: “I offered them this opportunity, to replace me, after being very supportive for many years.
“If they wanted to do it, if they wanted to continue in a way that I didn’t want to, for example, if they wanted to do a very intense tour and I only wanted to do a couple of occasional concerts, because I don’t like to do a lot of touring, well if they wanted to do it , I am willing to step aside.”
But ultimately he finds it unlikely that the rest of the group will travel without him. He added: “I’m not sure they want to do it. They haven’t done it so far, and I think it would take away from the prestige and legacy of the band itself, but as friends and as a person who cares a lot about my bandmates, I would Well”.
