Rolling Stones, a box set for the 50th anniversary of “Black and blue”
Nearly fifty years after its original release, i Rolling Stones celebrate their album released in April 1976 “Black and Blue” (read the review here) with a box set “Super Deluxe”published by Universal Music.
The 5-LP vinyl and 4-CD set also include a Blu-ray disc, a 100-page hardcover book and a replica of the tour poster. The limited edition 5-LP release on black and blue marbled vinyl will only be available on Universal Music online shop. But there are also vinyl (black and zoetrope), double vinyl (black and colored), CD and double CD formats.
“Black and Blue” It is the Stones’ thirteenth studio album, the first after the former guitarist’s departure Mick Taylorlater replaced by Ronnie Wood. The recording sessions were used as auditions with guitarists Harvey Mandel, Wayne Perkins, Jeff Beck And Robert A. Johnson. Finally, free from commitments with i Facesit was Ronnie Wood who joined Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts And Bill Wyman like a real Rolling Stone, contributing to the creation of three songs on the album “Black And Blue”. Shortly thereafter Ronnie officially signed on for the band’s US tour, beginning what would be his five-decade tenure with the group, featuring several live and studio albums, as well as numerous world tours. In a new interview, included in the box set, Ronnie reflects on joining the band in 1976 with these words: “It’s definitely where I’m meant to be.”
Musically, “Black and Blue” showcased the adventurous spirit of Rolling Stones blending reggae, funk and soul with the band’s signature rock sound. Let’s find “Hot Stuff”, “Hand of Fate”, “Fool to Cry”, “Memory Motel” And “Melody” with Billy Preston. “Black and Blue” it was the second album to be self-produced, signed ‘The Glimmer Twins’pseudonym used by Jagger and Richards for their roles as producers. Upon release, it reached the top of the best-selling albums chart in the United States and remained there for four consecutive weeks. It was also a great success in the UK, reaching number two as early as May 1976.
The reprint ‘Black and Blue 2025’ includes a disc with six previously unreleased recordings, including the Jagger/Richards composition “I Love Ladies”as well as an energetic version of “Shame, Shame, Shame” Of Shirley & Company. Also included are four instrumental Stones jams from the 1975 sessions, featuring guest guitarists. To accompany the reissue, a new music video for “Shame, Shame, Shame” is available for viewing. Directed by the Dutch director Camille Boumans, the video is a collage of the history and true soul of the Stones, which combines and amalgamates rare archive photographs with hand-drawn animations.
This is the complete recording of the band’s live concert: six nights at the Earls Court Exhibition Center in London, where they were joined on stage by the musicians Ian Stewart, Billy Preston And Ollie Brown.
The Blu-ray disc contains a previously unreleased television broadcast of the Stones’ 1976 show at Les Abattoirs in Paris, as well as the Dolby Atmos mix (of both the studio album and the concert). All audio content is also available in high-resolution stereo. The Super Deluxe box set includes a 100-page hardcover book and an essay by the Stones expert Paul Sextonas well as exclusive photographs captured during the album’s recording sessions and tour, and a replica of the 1976 Paris concert poster.
