THE Primal Screamfrom Glasgow, will release their 12th studio album “Come Ahead“, the first after “Chaosmosis” released in 2016. The new album will be available fromNovember 8, 2024 for BMG.
This is the first album the band has released since the death of their former keyboardist. Martin Duffy, occurred in December 2022.
“Love Insurrection”, the first single from the new album, had its world premiere on BBC Radio 6 Music last Wednesday. It is a funky dance track with prominent bass, horns and strings. The track also ends with a ptext art sung in italian which says like this:
They say we are impossibilists
Romantic dreamers
Not grown up yet
Our naive and stupid requests
Our beliefs a failed religion
But as surely as the sun will rise tomorrow, so will the children of the future stand against injustice, anger and cruelty.
The human soul will never be defeated.
Long live love!
They won’t pass!
In a press release the frontman and founder of the band Bobby Gillespie63, said about “Come Ahead” as a whole
I am very excited about this album, as you would be about your first record. If there was an overall theme for “Come Ahead” it would be that of conflict, both internal and external. The title is a Glaswegian term. If someone threatens to fight you, you say: “Come Ahead!” It is an expression that recalls the indomitable spirit of the Glaswegians, and the album itself shares this aggressive and confident attitude. They have a word for it up there, “gallus” (bold; reckless; reckless). Come Ahead is also a pretty cheeky title.
This is the tracklist of “Come Ahead”
01 “Ready To Go Home”
02 “Love Insurrection”
03 “Heal Yourself”
04 “Innocent Money”
05 “Melancholy Man”
06 “Love Ain’t Enough”
07 “Circus Of Life”
08 “False Flags”
09 “Deep Dark Waters”
10 “The Center Cannot Hold”
11 “Settlers Blues”
In October, the band, which has been in existence for 42 years, will perform live for the first time in 2024 as a special guest of the American rock star Alice Cooper in a series of concerts across the UK, including Glasgow’s Ovo Hydro, Manchester’s AO Arena and Leeds’ First Direct Arena.
Primal Scream’s last live appearance in Italy dates back to July 2, 2023 when they performed at I Days Milano at the Ippodromo SNAI.
The singer and founder of Primal Scream is Bobby Gillespieson of a socialist militant. The original lineup included Gillespie and guitarist Jim Beattielater replaced by Andrew Innes. Robert “Throb” Young He was the second stable guitarist until 2006, when he left the band due to personal problems. In 2014 Robert Young died. His place was taken by Barry Cadogan. Martin Duffywas the keyboardist from the late 80s until his death at the age of 55 in December 2022, due to the consequences of serious brain injuries caused by a fall at home. Gary “Mani” Mounfield, former founding member of The Stone Roses, played bass for over ten years until 2011. The current bassist of the band is Simone Butler, while the drummer is Darrin Mooney, who replaced various previous drummers. In 2020 another mourning hit the band: at the age of 56, vocalist Denise Johnson, considered to all intents and purposes a former member of the lineup (she collaborated with Bobby Gillespie and associates for five years, from 1990 to ’95), died. The group collaborates regularly with Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine as a producer and remixer, as well as a regular member (guitarist) on tour since the late 90’s.
Primal Scream are known for being the first to combine dance music with indie rock, creating an electronic rock with pop, punk and psychedelic influences. Their music oscillates between references to the Rolling Stones and the electronic dance music of the nineties. The album “Screamadelica” (1991), their main release, is a milestone of Britpop, with influences from acid house, dub, funk. Subsequently, the group incorporated R&B soul and hard rock, industrial elements in their subsequent albums.
