Pixies: New Album Is “The Night the Zombies Came”
2024 is a special year for the Pixies: it marks thirty-five years since the band’s second album, ‘Doolittle’, entered the UK Top 10 and twenty years since the lineup decided to reunite. Pixies have also announced the release of their new album “The Night the Zombies Came”, out on October 25th on BMG. It will be the first with new bassist Emma Richardsonformer member of Band of Skulls, and comes two years after the previous “Doggerel”. Frank Black, the band’s frontman, said: “Fragments that are related and juxtaposed with other fragments in other songs, basically a collection of songs. It all finds balance in what is called an LP, which ends up creating a sort of film”. The band worked with producer Tom Dalgety to create the project. The new album, consisting of thirteen tracks, is described as the “most cinematic of their career”.
The album includes the recent single “You’re so impatient”released in early June, and the brand new “Chicken”which you can listen to below. “Sometimes I feel like a chicken, pecking my way through the trees, when something up above chops my head off, now I’m dealing with decapitation,” sings Black Francis. Elsewhere in the song, Francis describes feeling like an actor in zombie movies, while guitarist Joey Santiago provides a sharp, eerie lead guitar part throughout the track. Previous single “You’re so impatient” has been described as “an explosive two-minute and nine-second zombie attack on the mall” and Black Francis said: “It sounds like a slightly comical suburban cultural moment: there’s this guy and there’s this girl, there’s this love dynamic going on. But the backdrop is the mall. And love blossoms even if the mall is rough, even if it’s a very zombie setting, from rock’n’roll horror movie”The group will soon be busy with a series of live shows around the world, some of which will also be performed alongside Pearl Jam.
