Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, vocal duet
Speaking yesterday at a special event dedicated to fans at Abbey Road Studios in London, Paul McCartney revealed that in “Home to Us” – the song which will be released on Friday 8 May, and is the second single from Paul’s next album, “The Boys of Dungeon Lane” arriving on 29 May – he will duet vocally with former bandmate Ringo Starr.
It is certainly not the first time that the two have collaborated: they frequently guest on each other’s solo albums, and McCartney has given Starr more than one song, starting from “Six o’ clock” (on the 1973 “Ringo” album) up to “Feeling the Sunlight” (2023) written and produced by Paul McCartney for Ringo’s EP “Rewind Forward”.
However, “Home to Us” is Paul’s first ever vocal duet with Ringo Starr, and features Chrissie Hynde and Sharleen Spiteri on backing vocals. The song was created around a drum phrase that Paul asked Ringo to record for the album he made with producer Andrew Watt, and is the only song on “The Boys of Dungeon Lane” to feature a guest drummer (Paul plays most of the instruments on the new record).
McCartney:
“Ringo came by the studio and played some drums. I told Andrew we should record a song and send it to him. So this song was designed entirely for Ringo. In writing the song I talk about where we come from. Like a lot of people, you start from nothing and build yourself. Ringo was from Dingle, and it was tough for him. He told us about getting robbed on the way home from work. I wrote the song from that idea and sent it to him. to Ringo. He sent me back a version where he’d only added a few lines to the chorus, so I thought maybe he didn’t like it. I called him and he said he thought I wanted him to sing just one or two lines, and I said I’d like to hear him sing the whole song. So we took my first verse, Ringo’s second, and we did a duet. We’d never done that before It was nice to hear from the girls. Chrissie Hynde said she would, and Sharleen Spiteri, too.
