Paramore Working on New Music, Says Hayley Williams
Fresh from a series of concerts opening for Taylor Swift during the European branch of their “Eras Tour”, which also passed through Italy last July with two dates at the San Siro Stadium in Milan (here is our story), Paramore confirmed that they are already working on new music.
In a new interview for “Dork”, frontwoman Hayley Williams has in fact revealed that the band is experimenting with new sounds which could lead to a new album, sequel to 2023’s “This is Why”. During the chat, the musician explained that, before leaving on tour with the “Cruel Summer” pop star, the group recorded some demos that “really surprised” her, underlining a particular influence deriving from the band led by Bjork, the Sugarcubes. On some free days during the European tour in support of Taylor Swift, Paramore also spent some time within the walls of the Clouds Hill studio in Hamburgwhere they began to work out an idea that, according to Hayley Williams, “seemed to go off the rails” from what the band had started working on prior to the tour.
During the same chat, Williams also reflected on the impact that opening for Taylor Swift has had on her and her band. In particular, the frontwoman explained how the “Eras Tour” has “completely changed” her relationship with Paramore’s 2009 hit, “The only exception“.
Taken from the band’s third album, “Brand New Eyes”, the song is one of the most famous songs of the American band and is believed to have been written for Williams’ then-boyfriend, Chad Gilbertwhom the musician married in 2016 before separating sixteen months later. In addition to saying that she has always felt “a sense of discomfort” when performing “The only exception” live in the past, in the interview for “Dork” Hayley Williams said that in order to prepare for the tour with Taylor Swift, her vocal coach helped her change his perception towards the songencouraging her to draw inspiration from her current relationship with Paramore guitarist Taylor York.
“He said to me, ‘You’re in a band with your partner. Look at him and pretend nothing else ever existed,'” Williams said, before adding: “.At first I felt stupid singing it. I felt silly having this pure expression of adoration drawing on the hope I had at nineteen. This tour has completely changed my relationship with this song. Now when I sing it, I’m happy“.
