Nothing new in Bruce Springsteen's live shows? Are we kidding!?
Here is the answer ready Bruce Springsteen to those who accused him of having, compared to his standards, a setlist that was too “rigid” and of not introducing anything new into the concerts of this world tour, especially compared to last year's dates.
For some time now (Read here) the American rocker had started to shake things up in this tour which started on March 19th from Phoenix and which will see him in Italy with a double live performance at the San Siro stadium of Milan scheduled for 1 and 3 June 2024. Yet another confirmation of the new choices comes from the lineup of the last concert of the April 4, 2024which Springsteen performed at Kia Forum in Inglewood, California in the county of Los Angeles, a “make-up” live of the one scheduled for December 4, 2023, postponed due to the health problems of the 74-year-old American musician.
Already at the opening of the show, just over three hours long, the first news arrives. The beginning is in fact entrusted to the cover of “Boom Boom”, the blues classic by John Lee Hooker which enters this tour for the first time and which returns to the setlist after its last appearance in 2016. Another cover that debuts on the tour is that of “Trapped” by Jimmy Cliff, the last of which was in August 2023.
The recent date of the “World Tour 2024” in the Californian town sees the performance as the first of the tour of “Tougher Than the Rest” from “Tunnel of Love” performed in tandem with Patti Scialfa (who returns to perform after an absence) and who was missing from the performance with the And Street Band since 2016. Immediately after comes “Fire” (from “The Promise”) in acoustic version and again in duet with Patti Scialfa.
Another novelty is the “traditional” “Jole Blon” which returns to the setlist, for the first time on this tour, since the last performance in 2017. In the encores Springsteen then performed “Land Of Hope And Dreams” which had been reintroduced into the tour on the San Francisco date of March 28th which had been opened by another novelty in the tour: “Something in the Night“, from “Darkness on the Edge of Town” which had not been used as an opening act since 1997. The second date in the Californian city on March 31st had entered the lineup “Light of Day” after the last performance with the band in 2016.
In short, in the six dates performed so far, each time Bruce has introduced songs that he hasn't performed for a long time. In addition to the aforementioned songs, Springsteen has returned to playing live.”Roll of the Dice” from “Human Touch” absent since 2017 (performed March 22 in Las Vegas) and “My City of Ruins” from “The Rising” also absent from 2017 (performed March 25 in San Diego).
Tomorrow April 7th he repeats in Inglewood.
