MTV closes in the UK after 40 years: no more videos
It’s the end of an era: MTV is closing in the UK after almost 40 years. The world’s first 24-hour music broadcaster will stop broadcasting video across the Channel, closing five channels at the end of the year.
According to what the BBC has learned, MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live will stop broadcasting after December 31st. However, the main channel, MTV HD, will remain on the air, but broadcast reality shows such as “Naked Dating UK” and “Geordie Shore”.
MTV launched in the United States in 1981, and the television channel quickly captured the public imagination by broadcasting pop videos “on demand”, hosted by enthusiastic “VJs” (video jockeys), who became almost as famous as the stars they featured. Groundbreaking moments of its early years included the world premiere of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video, the 16-hour broadcast of the Live Aid concerts in 1985 and the birth of the MTV Video Music Awards. In 1987 a European branch was launched and in 1997 the UK had its own dedicated channel, launched with the video of the football anthem “Three Lions” by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.
