Mosh pit sisters: the pink wave of rock overwhelms prejudices
Rock’n’roll, alternative, fluid, sensual, allergic to any type of pigeonholing and definition. If you think about it, they embody it perfectly spirit of their timewhich is also ours. After all, they say Last Dinner Party“we think that art always responds unconsciously to things that are in the in zeitgeist political and public”. The London group composed of Abigail Morris, Lizzie Mayland, Emily Roberts, Georgia Davies, Aurora Nishevci and Rebekah Rayner, aged between 24 and 27, is the leading face of that pink wave of rock which has already begun to overwhelm prejudices, clichés and clichés. In describing the phenomenon of
Nova Twinsthe duo composed of Amy Love and Georgia South, also from London like Morris and her companions, the Guardian wrote that the success of the two musicians “destroys clichés about who can make rock music”. It’s not rhetoric. The results and goals achieved speak for themselves, and for colleagues like the Linda Lindas or the Cumgirl8. Call them, if you want, mosh pit sisters.
“If there are three friends at your side, everything is easier”
While they were finishing work on their second album “No obligation”, which will be released this Friday two years after their debut with “Growing up”, the Linda Lindas they were engaged as Green Day’s support artist for the American dates of the “Saviors tour”. In the USA they also opened for the Rolling Stones: It happened last July, when the rock veterans’ “Hackney Diamonds tour” stopped at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. “If the Linda Lindas continue on this path, they will make the best records of their generation”, guaranteed Billie Joe Armstrong, the frontman of Green Day, speaking of Bela Salzar (20 years old, vocals and guitar), Eloise Wong (16 years old, vocals and bass), Lucia de la Garza (17 years old, guitar and vocals) and Mila de la Garza (14 years old, percussion and vocals).
They owe their name to the song by a Japanese band called Blue Hearts. They became famous in May 2021, when they performed live streamed during the lockdown for an event hosted by the Cypress Park library in Los Angeles: they played a song entitled “.Racist, sexist boy”, about a prejudiced schoolmate, which became a viral hit. “You’re a racist and sexist kid / you have racist and sexist toys / we will rebuild what you destroy”, they sang in that song, which became a manifesto. “The ‘Racist, sexist boy’ issue made us realize that a song can make a difference. The fact that so many people saw the video and were touched by it shows that we can make an impact even if there are only four of us”, Eloise Wong told US magazine Rolling Stone. Lucia, who like her sister Mila is the daughter of Carlos de la Garza, a Grammy-winning producer thanks to his collaboration with Ziggy Marley (Bob’s son), adds: “When we write about what we feel we get even closer. With this music we make a little of ourselves available to the world. It’s a little scary, but if there are three friends at your side everything is easier”.
The icons: from the Go-Go’s to Kate Bush. Passing through Cicciolina
Among their references they cite the Go-Go’swho between the ’70s and ’80s earned a place in the history of rock for being the first female group started from a basement and not built on a table to conquer the top of the charts, influencing subsequent generations with their attitude. And then Kate Bush and Siouxsie and the Banshees, champions of female rock. But there are also those who bother with extra-musical references. Like them Cumgirl8who say they owe everything to Cicciolina, to whom they dedicated their song of the same name: “Cicciolina is an Italian icon, porn star and former politician who was elected to parliament in the 1990s.
She fought for human rights and for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Cicciolina said ‘make love, don’t make war’ and used her divine power of femininity to troll the status quo by disintegrating it from within. We feel her ideals are central to cumgirl8’s philosophy of subversive change, peace, and strength in vulnerability. We hope you love our song, we love it very much. Cicciolina is the cumgirl1”. Very little is known about Lida Fox, Veronika Vilim, Avishag Rodrigues and Chase Lombardo. They are said to have “met in a sex chat 8,000 years ago, in another metaverse”. They started in 2019 from the basements of Manhattan with a mission: .subvert the status quo of rock with their riotous attitude, shouting slogans against patriarchy and capitalism. They just shipped the album “The 8th cumming” to stores on 4AD Records, the same label that made St. Vincent a phenomenon.
Concerts as “safe spaces”, against those with bad intentions
If the Cumgirl8 are inspired by Cicciolina, the Last Dinner Party – they will be in Italy on November 14th at the Teatro Regio in Parma – cite a more historical myth: that of Joan of Arcfeminist icon before its time. They pay homage to her in “My lady of mercy”: “Talk about being a girl. A girl who looks at a painting of Joan of Arc for the first time and thinks she looks so brave and so beautiful that she wants to kiss her. And maybe she also wants to kiss the girl next to her in the school choir”.
Their album “Prelude to ecstasy” was released last February, culminating a meteoric rise that began with their first performances in London clubs and then continued with the opening of the Rolling Stones’ show in Hyde Park, the victory of the Rising Star at the Brit Awards (the statuette awarded upon the revelation of the latest recording season, which placed the group in line with Adele, Florence and the Machine, Tom Odell, Sam Smith and James Bay), the triumph at the BBC Sound of 2024 (beating Kenya Grace and Peggy Gou, the DJ of “Nanana”). An episode that occurred before their concert at the Engine Sheld in Lincoln, United Kingdom has caused controversy in recent days. The staff of the venue where the band was supposed to perform, claiming to have become aware of unpleasant incidents that had occurred at previous Last Dinner Party concerts, .subjected some male fans who showed up alone at the venue to a sort of interrogationwith questions like: “How long have you been following them? What is your favorite song?”. The goal? Find out any bad guys. The band has said in the past that they want to do their own shows.”safe spaces especially for women, non-binary people and queer people”. “When we started, it was predominantly white males at our concerts. They have always been respectful and are always welcome, but we noticed that before our success there were no women or people of color at rock concerts. At festivals we were the only ones on the bill who looked like us,” the Nova Twins said about their experience.
“Just two normal girls making their way in life”
“Supernova”, the latest album by Amy Love and Georgia South, also seen on stage at the Sziget Festival in Budapest this summer, allowed the two musicians to win a nomination for the Mercury Prize, one of the most coveted and prestigious music awards in the United Kingdom (in the end Little Smiz won with his “Sometimes I Might be introvert”): a consecration. The duo went on to occupy a space on the rock chessboard that had been empty until then, with songs in which Love and South talk about sexual harassment and gender inequality: “Obviously we want to represent young black women, but our project doesn’t it speaks only to them: it speaks to all marginalized communities. We have songs that aren’t just about politics. We have songs about ending affairs, killing our boyfriends, and having sex. Dig deep and you’ll see that we’re just two normal girls making our way in life”.
