Stoppard, in fact, became famous first and foremost as playwright: His most famous play is “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” (premiered in 1966), which follows two minor characters from William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and, like much of his work, includes many philosophical reflections.

He also worked regularly in the cinemawriting the first draft of the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s “Empire of the Sun” and the final rewrite of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” He also contributed to “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” and was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil.”
