Michael Stipe sang “Everybody Hurts” again for The Simpsons
From “Hang on”, hold on, to “Munch on”, keep chewing: REM evidently has no shortage of irony, because they lent and rewrote one of their most famous and well-known songs to the Simpsons, transforming it into the anthem of a character who eats compulsively. In the last episode of the animated series – now in its 39th season and with over 800 episodes – “Everybody hurts” becomes “Everybody Kirks” – the reference is to the character of Kirk Van Houten, who we see wandering around the house looking for food. “When your day is long/And at night, at night you snack alone/when you’re sure your hanger’s gone…” sings Michael Stipe in the new version.
Stipe also appears in an animated version with the features of the famous 1994 video clip in which the song was sung during a motorway traffic jam, with the thoughts of the people stuck in the car superimposed.

The band had already appeared on The Simpsons 25 years ago, in the third episode of the 13th season, “Homer the Moe”, in which the band sang “It’s the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine)
