May Pang: “John Lennon Didn’t See Himself as a Big Superstar”
In an interview with Goldmine magazine, the 73-year-old May Pang he stated that John Lennon he didn’t take himself too seriously. “What people don’t realize about John is that he was actually shyer than most people would think. He loved being around people, but he was introverted. He didn’t think of himself as a big superstar.”
He then continued what at the beginning of the seventies was the personal assistant of the English musician and of Yoko Ono: “He knew he was, but he didn’t take himself that seriously.
I remember we were sitting there, watching television, and a commercial came on and it said ‘the legendary Eric Clapton’. So he said, ‘That’s hard, because I couldn’t live up to that.’ I said, ‘Like what?’ He said, ‘Legendary.’ So I looked at him and said, ‘Don’t you think you’re a legend?’ He said, ‘Oh no, not me. I’m not.’ He didn’t really take himself seriously. He kind of had no idea. He knew he was famous in a different way, if we were out there, he would have said, ‘Yeah, I am.’ But at home he didn’t say, ‘I’m John Lennon.'”
May Pang And John Lennon they stayed together for over 18 months. “It was ’73. It’s been 50 years,” she explained of her relationship with the former Beatle and how Yoko Ono he proposed to her. “I know it sounds crazy, but it was 50 years ago. I was sitting in my office thinking—I hadn’t even had my first cup of coffee yet—‘What is he telling me?’ So, this whole thing happened, and I was sitting there thinking, ‘But I don’t want him.’
The writer of Chinese origin who was the wife of Tony Viscontithe producer, among others, of David Bowie, She added: “When you work for someone, you know their dynamic. I don’t want to get into the mix of all that. I’m fine with my job. I’m sitting behind the desk. I’m fine. I work in the studio, I do whatever else. She kept saying, ‘I think it would be good for him.’ I say no, then she walks out of the room and says, ‘I think you should,’ and that’s how it started.”
May Pang He wrote two books about his time with Lennon: a memoir entitled “Loving John” and a photographic book entitled “Instamatic Karma”. A documentary about their relationship titled “The Lost Weekend: A Love Story” It was released in 2022.
