Materazi Future Club: a trident between football and post punk

Cassano, Gattuso, De Rossi, Hamsik. They are not only the names of some of the most famous footballers who have marked the Italian Serie A championship, but also the titles of the songs of the Materazi Future Club, a surprising trio, with a post-punk soul, capable of transforming the most beautiful sport in the world into music. Their new single was recently released, “God Forgive Riganò” in collaboration with the speaker Federico Russo, a piece that anticipates the next recording project of Edoardo Piron, Riccardo Montanari and Marco Manini. “We've always liked movies like 'Snatch' and 'Lock & Stock'. Listening to the song it came naturally to us to take up Guy Ritchie's aesthetics, that very stylish discomfort of clandestine gambling dens and the 'fun' and light-hearted crime typical of the English director”, said the trio while presenting the video. The reference to football is inevitable: “Rigagol”. Bricklayer, then footballer, then coach and then bricklayer again.

Christian Riganò was a complete bomberhe brought Fiorentina back to Serie A with goals and then went back to work with bricks and concrete – recalls the band – his career has seen him wear a large number of different shirts, from Sicily to Tuscany, up to the adventure in Spain with Levante. The use of words linked to the profession of bricklayer first and to those of the football world afterwards, act as a connection between the two universes of Riganò who meet in the chants dedicated to him by his fans.” And so thanks to the voice and words of Federico Russo, with their musically corrosive style, the Materazi Future Club (or even “the” if you prefer to evoke an imaginary football club) have chosen to tell a sincere and fascinating character, a footballer 'other times. But this time the sound, compared to the first releases with which they made themselves known, is more varied: ska, reggae and dub have taken the field by embracing the post-punk that has always distinguished them.

The “Materazi Future Club” was founded in 2020 by three roommates who they decided to combine dark and electronic punk with the most famous interviews in the world of football, focusing on the poetry and naive romanticism of the latter. The result? Enveloping and pounding songs with some symbolic words of the footballers embedded in them. The project officially comes to life with the publication of “De Rossi” by Woodworm Label, arousing the curiosity of professionals and the public. In February 2020, on the occasion of “MiAmi TVB”, the band goes on stage for the first time, managing to make the sold-out Circolo Ohibò in Milan dance for the occasion. Two years of hiatus followed and the band decided to return to the stage only when the audience had had the freedom to jump and this happens in 2022 with, among others, the lives at the Circolo Magnolia in Milan and at the Farm Festival in Bari.

In 2022 the tour also touched the cities of Rome, Grosseto, Turin and Piacenza. “Cassano” and “Gattuso” in 2021 were included by Spotify in the “Magic Nights” playlist drawn up on the occasion of the 2021 European Football Championships, won by our national team. In December 2022 their first album “Formazione titular” was released which collects the singles and new songs/stories including “Criscito”, “Soviero”, “Zeman”, “Ronaldo” and many others. In 2023 they play again at “MiAmi” and in 2024 they return with new music and new sporting vicissitudes to tell: the game has just begun.
