Maria Antonietta and Colombre: “We love the waves, not the currents”

There is the hall of a hotel, on the Riviera. The sound of the waves of the sea turns into voice, laughter, microphones, elderly people who sing to karaoke. It is there that Maria Antonietta and Colombre meet for the first time. That’s where it all begins. “Miss Buonasera” is the first piece of the Joint Album of the two songwriters, duo and couple in life. A fresh and colorful piece like a granita that if tasted also has the power to make it travel over time. Letizia Cesarini and Giovanni Imparato, these are their real names, after several solo records, awards and goals achieved, get involved. Together.

The song talks about a first appointment. Is it yours?
Maria antonietta: Yes, there is little fiction (laughs, editor’s note). When we thought about which first song we could have listened to the public, we thought of this because it is a first appointment among us who also becomes the first appointment with those who listen to us, who can know this new phase of our path.

What do you really exist?
Colombre: Hotel Leonardo, Riviera Adriatica. Our areas, in the Marche.

The song is fresh, but it also has echoes of the 60s.
Colombre: There was a challenge at the base: to do something that united our paths. This piece has an almost punk root, if we want to say it, because it is based on three agreements and this in my opinion makes it contemporary. Today many pop songs have such a, very simple structure. Also in the 90s there were cases of great hits, with the melody that changed and growing, based on a few agreements: I think of “tonight tonight” of Smashing pumpkins. In fact, there are also the 1960s echoes: they probably emerge because we live at the sea, the atmosphere is that (smiles, editor’s note).

Will the record be like this?
Maria antonietta: The disc is nice crazy. It is a very varied album, we played.
Colombre: There are different genres, from reggae to punk to cantiutorate. All types of music that we listened to when we met.
Maria antonietta: It is a written and composed disc together. It is a great trip, even tiring if you want because still living together and being a couple you are always inside this process. We are very proud of the final result.
Colombre: You wake up in the morning and breakfast talks about how the bass sounds, in the evening I think back to the arches. Making a record, according to together, was a great carousel.

You have not mentioned, as a genre, pop.
Maria Antonietta: When I do it with my managers, convinced that a piece that I made is “mega pop”, I always clear them (smile, ed.).
Colombre: Undoubtedly we like melody, but it is also true that there is always something restless in what we do. Also in this first single there is a passage that reminds us: “We like the waves, we don’t like the current. I only understood it now, finally”.
Maria Antonietta: We recognize ourselves in this. We like dreams, waves, errors.

You have always collaborated in your respective records on texts and productions. And there is also a precedent: “You and I certainly”.
Colombre: Yes, she had written it, it’s part of my latest album. And we sung it together. There were bells who made us understand that we could have made a record together. In the end we have always collaborated secretly. In Letizia’s records I put the hand several times and she also gave me several ideas. The disc is a celebration of this hidden relationship. But a motivation was needed.

What was it?
Maria Antonietta: An artistic motivation. There are those who do it for marketing or for a particular operation, all reasons that are fine eh, but they were not enough for us. To write songs for us there must be something more. And here we opened the yellow drawer.

The yellow drawer?
Colombre: It is the drawer of a piece of furniture where we found a hard disk that dated back to 2011. In the first week we met we already pulled songs and drafts. Loaring them again, as if it were sentimental archeology, we were affected. Maybe everything was already written there.
Maria Antonietta: We completed something started over ten years ago when we knew each other very little. And we did it now that we know each other well. It is as if those songs had waited for us.

A couple who makes music today in Italy: how do you escape the coma affection?
Colombre: The boys are very strong. But apart from Fausto who had his “Oedipus” project, they are born just as a duo. Instead, we have our paths that have been intertwined now.
Maria Antonietta: Stop completely from this question would be presumptuous, but we are actually different.
Colombre: In the end we could simplify by saying that all couples who make music in Italy live in the same building, but everyone has their own furnished apartment. Al Bano and Romina have the penthouse. Then there are us, the coma things, the boiling lagoons, the list representative etc.

What if Al Bano comes to play to ask you for salt?
Maria antonietta: Beautiful. It would be a circle that closes: we recorded the record in Lecce, Puglia, at the superstudio which is located near a estate of which the owner Al Bano is.
