Madonna vs Charli xcx: the dancefloor is not dead
“I think the dance floor is dead, it’s so dead/ So now we’re making rock music,” Charli xcx sings in the new single, over a backdrop of guitars. The song arrives at a particular moment: after the pop-dance success of “Brat” which established the singer as a standout, after the unsuccessful operation of the soundtrack of “Wuthering Heights”. And while Madonna is in full comeback campaign with the second chapter of “Confessions on the dancefloor”, arriving in July. An album dedicated to dance music.
It is in this context that Madonna’s post in which she defends dance music should be read. A dig at Charli xcx, also my nominee. On Instagram, “Confessions on a Dance Floor,” Madonna wrote: “If your dance floor feels dead, maybe you’re playing the wrong music,” followed by a mirrorball symbol
Communication strategy? Of course: Madonna chose another young rival, Sabrina Carpenter, as an ally, both on the Coachella stage and for one of the first singles of “Confessions on a Dance Floor II”, “Bring Your Love”.
The first chapter, released in 2005 when he signed one of his most explicitly dance albums, wants to reiterate the centrality of the dancefloor in one’s idea of pop – a little attention with a diss track never hurts, even if we are in pop and not rap.
