Lowtopic seeks something in electronics
Lowtopic is a manufacturer, multi -instrumentalist and Live Act Genovese, artistic director of Boem Festival and the newborn Unsouth Recordswith about thirty traces to the assets between albums, EPs and remixes published for Italian and international labels. It is that type of artist that when he meets him, his having something ancestral and at the same time modern, immersed between ancient rituals and collective emotions related to today. At the registry office Francesco Bacci, born in 1989, was a member of the Punk-HC 1000 Degrees band (2008-2015) and guitarist of the Indie Pop Ex-Otago band (2010-2022). In electronic music he found a house and a new soul to which he chose to give space and priority with continuous publications, live and collaborations. He recently extended the project to the composition of soundtracks for cinema, theater and installations. “I have always been ‘a band boy’ who in the end had to deal with solitude – he explains – because the electronics and the work in the studio, alone, leads to that. My study is under my grandfather’s house and when I had to greet him because he died, that feeling has increased. So in the pieces, especially in the last ones that I made, I inserted fragments of memories and moments with people with whom I shared special moments. My children, my partner Paola, my friends. It is as if in my music I tried a sense to why what they are every day “.
The Lowtopic project has a home in Genoa, but is talking about it more and more even outside the Ligurian borders, thanks to its European live and above all the quality of what she does. He has a home in a study, the one under his grandfather’s house who unfortunately no longer is there, full of guitars, synthesizers, a piano, pedals, statuettes, plants, asoners, books and coffee machines. Lowtopic Live is accompanied by Emilio Pozzolini (Port Royal, Earth Begins) to modular synthesizers and Nicola Villa (Visual Substance) at Visualsin an immersive performance made of improvisation, rearranged tracks, mashups, breakfasts, clubbing, cables, potentiometers, keys and nostalgic agreements on the electrical plan.
“In electronics I found punk, counterculturethe desire to move, study, question myself – continues the artist – I moved from the comfort area. I have an atypical identity, certainly not that of the producer/Clubber. I have two children, a Phd and I live in a city that has a bad relationship with contemporaneity. But I keep believing that there is nothing better than going to play. Upload the synths, connect cables, take a plane, read the expressions of the public, have chat and kilometers. In the end I am more interested in people, potentiometers and speakers that vibrate rather than the Reels. I know with relative certainty I have done more than five hundred concerts in almost twenty years of music and played in about fifteen countries, but I don’t have much idea how many streams have collected my tracks. THEOwtopic is five years old, one less than my first daughter, but it is already the most identity and lucid thing I’ve ever done. I chose the music when I was about to lose it, as if it had simply happened before. “
His latest work is “Places”, out on June 13, is a collection of memories in scattered order. It is his most varied project. A pretext to understand something about talking about others. An excuse to remember people by telling the places. “Emilio Pozzolini said to me: ‘The driver’s box is your Linus cover’ and so on this round I scarred with the beat, with the timbre, I still changed the way not to repeat myself“, Smiles. New traces, an eclectic set of instrumental electronics made of analog and modular synthesizers, keys, ropes, samples and field recordings. Breakbeat and Dowtempo, hints at clubbing, organic sounds and a widespread search for sound design make it a cohesive and heterogeneous job for those who want to move their shoulders and themselves. “All the music is autobiographical – he admits – I write to understand something about the way I try to stay in the world. When I spend the hours looking for a sound I feel like Pirsig ne ‘The zen and the maintenance of the motorcycle’. There is more and more electronic music around: even if it is a language with a lot of decades behind it, there seems to be a lot of space still to explore “.
