Laioung is back and it’s immediately 2016

In 2016, a group of boys introduced a new genre to Italy, modifying the phonetics and musical language. 2016 was the year of trap. One of those protagonists, Laioung, surprisingly returned to the scene with a song called “2016”, a tribute to that season in which he and names like Sfera Ebbasta, Ghali, Tedua, Izi, Rkomi and others were throwing bases to storm the market and enter the mainstreammaking Italian pop pale, the one with which rap today, after its definitive customs clearance, has come to collaborate. “2016” is a tribute to that magical year and at the same time a starting point to open a new musical dimension. Every sound, every word, was designed to surprise and inspire,” says Laioung.

The piece is very linked to the trap universe of that period and raises a question: does it still make sense to look at that panorama? Trap, as we know it, has run its course. It seems paradoxical for a disruptive sound universe like the trap one, but the risk of nostalgia and traditionalism is around the corner. Unless a truly new formula is found. It is no coincidence that many protagonists of that season have embraced evolutions, in some cases even different genres. “2016”, however, is still with both feet inside that bubble. Born to an Italian mother and a Sierra Leonean father, Laioung (Giuseppe Bockarie Consoli, this is his real name) embodies a fusion of different culturesa trademark that, even on a musical level, has always been recognized by him.

Raised between Europe, Africa and Canada, he brings with him a wealth of experience that is reflected in his musical productions. He made his debut in 2016 with the single “Giovane Giovane” which established him as one of the most interesting artists on the urban scene Italian. With his independent label RRR Records he has created pieces that range from trap, afrobeat and international sounds. Laioung is synonymous with experimentation and cultural contamination, which is why it is reasonable to expect something that tries to surprise and not look back.
