It’s been 20 years since Tool played these songs live

Tool fans know that each of their concerts is an experience in itself. Above all, those who live in know this New Zealandbecause right in Auckland the band performed songs that they hadn’t performed live for over twenty years.

This past weekend, the progressive metal luminaries took to the Spark Arena stage and brought out several long-since songs, notably from their 1993 debut album “Undertow,” 1996’s “Ænima” and 2006’s “10,000 Days.”

The rare pearls of the first evening were “Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann)”, never played since 2009; “Disposition and H.”, never played since 2002; and “Crawl Away,” which hasn’t been played since 1998. On the second night, they dusted off “Intension” for the first time since 2014 and “Prison Sex” for the first time since 2002.

In addition to the deeper songs, the band performed its cover of “Hand of Doom” by Black Sabbath on both evenings. The only other time they had played the 1970 heavy metal song (from Sabbath’s second album, “Paranoid”) was at Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell concert, the historic “Back To The Beginning” held in Birmingham last July.

On the future of Tool, Justin Chancellor he says: “We’re always working on new music. Last week I was in the studio with Danny (Carey, the drummer, ed.) throwing down some ideas. But I always say this: art doesn’t have a real agenda. You can’t force it. And if you do, it tends to not work so well. So I think, especially in our band, that somehow it’s just the way it works. It’s a different kind of alchemy” explains the bassist.
