Iranian rapper Amir Tataloo sentenced to death
The Iranian rapper Amir Tataloo he was sentenced on appeal to the death penalty for blasphemy, in particular for insulting the prophet Muhammad.
The Supreme Court harshened the sentence to the maximum consequences by accepting the public prosecutor’s appeal against a previous five-year prison sentence.
The artist will be able to appeal the sentence which is not final.
Tataloo, 37, introduced rap music to Iran and is one of the genre’s best-known figures in his country. In 2018 he moved to Istanbul after difficulties preventing him from obtaining a music license.
The trial in which he was now sentenced to capital punishment began after his extradition from Türkiye to his country.
In addition to the blasphemy charge, Amir Tataloo was charged with crimes such as promoting prostitution and disseminating obscene content. It is not the first time that he has been arrested on different charges, including, in 2016, that of disturbing public opinion. In 2015, however, he wrote a song in support of Iran’s nuclear program.
