Hozier’s “Too Sweet” returns to the trend thanks to Damiano David

For a few weeks Damiano David, Måneskin frontman, regularly inserted Hozier’s “Too Sweet” in his live repertoire. The choice attracted the attention of the public and professionals, not only for the popularity of the original song – one of the most successful singles of 2024 – but also for the consistency with the musical and vowel path undertaken by Damiano in the solo area. The piece of the Irish singer -songwriter has returned to Tiktok. The cover appeared initially during acoustic performances or sets parallel to those of the Roman bandas part of the most intimate performances in which Damiano can explore different registers than the rock imprint that characterizes Måneskin.

“Too Sweet”, with his modern soul-pop style and a melancholy but accessible writinglends itself to a personal reinterpretation, without the need for particular changes and therefore appears perfect for this phase of Damiano’s journey, which is preparing for his first solo tour. Hozier’s original song – Irish artist known for songs like “Take Me To Church” – tells of a unbalanced relationship between two emotionally incompatible people: “I think you’re too sweet for me,” says the refrain. The tone suspended between irony and bitterness adapts well to the vocal expressiveness of Damiano, who in recent years has repeatedly shown interest in sounds soul, blues and songwriters, both in the studio and live. In vocal terms, “Too Sweet” also represents a favorable soil to highlight the timbre qualities of the singer: hot tones, soft dynamics, control over the falsetto. Unlike the most energetic performances with the Måneskin, in which the performative element often dominates, here the focus is almost entirely on interpretation.

It is not the first time that Damiano pays homage to songs by contemporary artists in English. In the past he has played songs by Arctic Monkeys, Lana del Rey and Jeff Buckley, showing constant attention to the English -speaking scene and for vocal models other than those of pure rock. The repeated presence of Too Sweet in the lineup of his performances suggests that it is not a random choice. It is likely that the song reflects, at least in part, a personal taste or a mood that Damiano intends to share with the public in a more direct and less built context. In addition, the popularity of the song on Tiktok and Spotify made it an immediately recognizable piece also for a part of the new generation audience.
