Green Day: A Billion Candles for “American Idiot”

It’s been 20 years since the release of “American Idiot” of the Green Day and the seminal pop-punk album continues to please fans around the world, as demonstrated by the title track reaching a major milestone: surpassing 1 billion streams on SpotifyThe milestone was reached last week (we’re now already at 1Mil 200 million), while Green Day are on the road with their “Saviors Tour“, which not only supports their new album, “Saviors,” but celebrates the 30th anniversary of “Dookie” and the 20th anniversary of “American Idiot,” with the band performing both albums in their entirety at each stop (Read the concert review here).

Lyrically, “American Idiot” addresses the turbulent socio-political climate of 21st-century America, referencing national tension, propaganda, a media-controlled country, and more. For this reason, it is no surprise that the song has remained a beloved anthem. Now, Along with “Basket Case”, it is the second Green Day song to surpass the 1 billion copies mark.and the band’s image is the playlist cover Billions Club from Spotify this week.

Coming soon, Green Day will continue to celebrate “American Idiot” (Read the review here) with a massive anniversary box set, arriving October 25th with a tracklist that includes several previously unreleased tracks. They’ll also be honoring the album in unconventional ways, like unveiling an American Idiot-themed Keurig coffee maker, complete with K-Cups from their Punk Bunny Coffee line (which will also be stocked at 7-Elevens for a limited time).

On the musical side, Green Day continue the “Saviors Tour” with shows in Texas and on the West Coast, concluding with one final performance in San Diego on September 28.
