Gianni Togni, his second album returns (with unpublished)
I had recently arrived in CGD as head of the press when in mid -June 1980 Gianni Togni entered the standings with “Luna”, still today his “Signature Song”. And for a few weeks he disputed the first place in the ranking to “I don’t know what I would give” by Alan Sorrenti and “Stella Stare” by Umberto Tozzi, and then conquer the summit at the end of August and keep it for six weeks. I remember well the crowd that risked suffocating him upon arrival at the Verona Festivalbar, that September (he had as the body guards and Sandro Delor).
A sensational success for an almost-thriving, which had an unbeliented album behind it for the IT, “in such a circumstance”, which was followed by a second LP with the title with a “impossible” length (“… and at that moment, entering the theater empty, one afternoon dressed in white, I take off my jacket, I turn on the lights and on the stage I invent …”). That album, with the songs written all by Gianni Togni and his co -author for the texts Guido Morra, is re -proposed next October, 45 years after the release, by Warner Music in a special celebratory edition: a box entitled Abbreviated (“… and at that moment … Remix 2025”) with all the eight songs of the album – including “Luna”, both in Italian and in Italian – Remixed and remastered by the original tapes, engraved in the studios of the CGD of Milan by Sam Baracchetti (and burned at the time by Marco Inzadi). The musicians: Roberto Puleo on guitar, Gigi Capellotto on bass, Andy Suri on drums.
The arrangements and the direction of the orchestra were by Maurizio Fabrizio, who also played the keyboards on the disc. The production was by Giancarlo Lucariello.
I asked Guido Morra, author of the lyrics of all the songs of the album, to send a “cratolina” through Rockol to Gianni Togni:
Dear, dear Gianni, the excellent Zanetti asks me a few lines, and our infinite Ping Pong games in the courtyard of the house where you lived with your girlfriend of the time, near Piazza Bologna, come to mind. I was stronger, but you fought on every point with admirable tenacity, and every now and then I could even win, seeing your indomitable and combative attitude rewarded. Afternoons and evenings and then also nights of chatter, discussions and patterns around the songs that we were writing, one after the other, as always should be made, in friendship, in good company, between a glass of wine and a laugh. What a nostalgia for those times! With the same spirit we wrote our musical “Hollywood-therapy of a star” and the wish I do is that, with the same spirit we will soon be able to write, you never know, another musical. You are great. A strong hug, your old friend Guido.
“… and at that moment …” Remix 2025 will be composed of an LP, which includes the eight tracks of the album, and a CD which, in addition to the same eight tracks, also contains the alternative versions of four songs made for this occasion, in addition to “Luna” in Spanish, for a total of thirteen songs. The box will be enriched by a 20 -page booklet with the texts of the songs written by Guido Morra and with photos of the time. These are unpublished images, digitized and color, made by the brother of Gianni, Piero Togni.
The sound restoration work took place through the combined use of analog and digital techniques, to give new life to the original dynamics without altering them. The remix of the album was made by opening the original tracks of the ribbon recordings of 1979. The alternative versions of four songs included in this box were made by eliminating the original rhythms and highlighted instrumental elements recorded in 1979 but excluded from the final mixing.
