There is not much serenity between the various components of the Black Sabbath. After the doubts for the health of Ozzy And his substantial presence on stage also the bassist Geezer Butler He admits that he has fears and having had nightmares in view of the band’s farewell show.
The original formation of the Sabbath – Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward – will perform for the last time on stage on 5 July at the Villa Park in Birmingham, as headliner of a billboard full of stars, with the best of hard rock and Heavy Metal.
In an interview with The Guardian (after the one with the frontman), the bassist admitted that he already feels nervous for what is probably the most talked about show but also the most awaited of the band’s entire career.
“I already have palpitations,” Butler reveals. “In fact, last night I had a nightmare. I dreamed that everything went on stage and that we all became dust. It is important to leave a great impression, because it is the last time that people will see us live. So in the evening it must be great”.
The show “Back to the Beginning”, which will see Osbourne, Iommi, Butler and Ward sharing the stage for the first time since 2005, has been announced in February. Speaking with the Guardian, Ozzy said that the fact that the concert takes place in the House of the Aston Villa, loved by Butler, could have helped to bring Butler to participate in the show, after in 2023 the singer had said that the bassist was not in contact with him for years and labeling Butler as a “fucking asshole”.
In the previous interview with the Guardian Osbourne, he also confirmed his definitive farewell to the scene after the performance scheduled in July, claiming that he did not want to die in the bed of a hotel.
The Back to the Beginning event, lasting one day, will also see the last solo performance of Ozzy and a support cast that includes metal, tools, Guns n ‘Roses,. Slayer, Alice in Chains, Mastodon and others, in addition to Billy Corgan, Fred Durst’s appearances, Jonathan Davis, Wolfgang Van Halen, Pope V Perpetua, Sammy Hagar, Zakk Wylde, Jake and Lee and others. Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) is the musical director of the event.
“We have a very, very simple goal,” said Morello at the beginning of this year, “and it is to make this the biggest day in the history of Heavy Metal. To this end, you will probably have seen the lineup. And let me say that there will also be some great superstars that will surprise that day. So, the idea is to recognize the importance of that band in a way that the whole world will know forever”.
“If it hadn’t been for those four boys, perhaps we would still be wandering in the dark,” said Kirk Hammett of Metallica at the beginning of this year. “But the fact that they created a genre – not only have created it, but then developed it and then transformed into some different things during their career – is absolutely impressive for me and for my colleagues from a musical point of view. I mean, how do you thank such a person?”.
