Foo Fighters: the new single, dedicated to a drug dealer

“Of all the people”, the new single by Foo Fighters, talks about ghosts and shortcomings, another appetizer – after “Asking for a friend”, the title track “Your favorite toy” and “Caught in the echo” – of the new album “Your favorite toy”, out on April 24th. «Of all people, you survived / When no one else could stay alive / You know you should be dead / But you’re alive instead / Of all people, you survived», «Of all people, you survived / When no one else could stay alive / You know you should be dead / But you’re alive instead / Of all people, you survived», sings Dave Grohl in the verses of the song, which seems to talk about the so-called “survivor syndrome”. It is a psychological disorder that affects those who have escaped a traumatic event – and the former Nirvana drummer has experienced traumatic events: starting with the premature death of Kurt Cobain – in which others died or suffered irreparable damage, which pushes those who suffer from it to mistakenly feel guilty for having survived.

But who is the song specifically about? Dave Grohl revealed it in an interview with the Guardian: “Of the people” was inspired by the meeting with a drug dealer who sold heroin to the rock stars of the scene in the 90s. “I hadn’t seen him in 30 years, and he is alive, healthy and sober. I was so happy that this person survived, but at the same time I was devastated, thinking of all the people I know that we lost because of that drug,” Grohl said. Who then added: «I was so damn angry, but at the same time so grateful to see him alive and well. Again, an internal dialogue, I felt so conflicted and divided. When I reread the lyrics, I talked about it with my therapist: is it perhaps survivor’s guilt?

“Your favorite toy”, already available for pre-order on the Sony Music website, was recorded entirely at home and co-produced by Foo Fighters together with Oliver Roman, with sound engineering handled by Oliver Roman and mixing entrusted to Mark “Spike” Stent. The release of “Your favorite toy” marks the beginning of Foo Fighters’ gigantic “Take cover World tour”, which will kick off on June 10th at the Unity Arena in Oslo, after two headlining dates at the US festivals Welcome to Rockville and Bottlerock: the Foo Fighters will be in Italy for a single stop at I-DAYS Milan, Sunday 5th July 2026, at the Snai La Maura Hippodrome in Milan.
