Eurovision: Joost Klein Investigation Closed
Almost three months after Joost Klein was disqualified from the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, after being investigated by the police for intimidating a female member of the show’s production team, the investigation into the Dutch singer has been shelved. The artist, one of the favourites to win with the song “Europapa”, had been excluded from the competition shortly before the final and, in confirming its decision, the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) reiterated its “zero tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour”.
The Swedish prosecutor’s office has now revealed that Klein “made a movement that hit the woman’s camera” and that “the events unfolded quickly and were perceived differently by the witnesses present.” Malmö prosecutor Fredrik Jönsson said he had closed the investigation because “it was not possible to prove that the act was capable of causing serious fear or that the subject had such an intention.”
In response to the decision taken by the Swedish prosecutor, Joost Klein published a long message on his official Instagram profile, where the words “Eurovision 2025” appeared in his bio. The post in question reads:
“The last two months have been terrible. Even though I love performing all over the world, something didn’t feel right. Why did we have to wait so long for an answer? Every day I felt insecure, while deep down I knew the truth. There is no case against me, because there never was a case. We should take care of each other, we should support each other, and we should all stick together. Corporations only want to protect their economic interests and tried to use me as a shield. A village against the city… Guess what? Love always wins. Trust the process. Even though I had lost all hope, now we’re back! Mode, album!”
The Eurovision Song Contest 2024, which saw last year’s Sanremo winner Angelina Mango represent Italy with the song “La noia”, was won by Switzerland and Nemo with “The code” beating Croatian Baby Lasagna. Despite being disqualified from the competition, Joost Klein was rewarded by streaming, taking his revenge, which currently sees him at almost 140 million streams on Spotify alone for his “Europapa”.
