Debbie Harry and that meeting with the serial killer Ted Bundy
Before the Blondie became the local Paladini of Punk and New Wave, and signed with the British label Chrysalis, the singer Debbie Harry worked as a waitress at Max’s Kansas Cityone of the most famous clubs in New York, frequented by anyone, by the ex Beatle John Lennon to the artist Andy Warhol. It was the First half of the seventies and New York was a city in declineclose in the grip of a wave of violent crime. Obviously, those who worked in the city at night – whether they were at the hotel, bars, restaurants or even in theaters – had to run their risks. At the time, Debbie Harry knew well that walking around the streets late in the evening could mean attracting unwanted attention. Once, in particular, a terrifying meeting with the one who has always identified as The well -known serial killer Ted Bundy. Before reporting the epiposidian of his autobiography “Face it”, published in 2019, Harry returned with his memory to that evening when he went up to Bundy’s Volkswagen Beetle during an interview with Mojo in 2002. As resumed by Loudersound, rethinking the meeting with the pluriomicida arrested in 1978, the singer said:
“It was late at night and I was trying to cross Houston Street, from the Lower East Side to the seventh Avenue. For some reason there were no taxi and I wore these huge rafts. A car continued to turn around, and this guy called me: ‘come on, I give you a passage’. In the end I gave up and went up in the car. I realized that I had made a big mistake.
First of all, in the car it was trembling and the windows were raised almost to the top. The man wore a white shirt and was very attractive. Then I realized that he had the worst stinks in the armpits I had ever heard. I looked towards the door to lower the window and I saw that there was neither handle nor lever. Then I glanced around and I realized that the car had been emptied. There was nothing inside. The hair were raised to me. “
As previously reported in another story of 1989, Debbie Harry told that at that point he tried to put his arm in the glimpse of the passenger side window, trying to open the door from the outside. “As soon as he noticed, he tried to turn the corner at full speed. I was thrown out of the car, landing in the middle of the road. I was lucky, really“, he remembered Mojo.
