David Gilmour, the details of the new album ‘Luck and Strange’
Preceded by the single – available from yesterday, Friday 9 August – “Dark And Velvet Nights”the first album of new material from former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour in nine years, “Luck and Strange,” will be released by Sony Music on September 6.
Recorded between Brighton and London over a period of about five months, the work was produced by Gilmour himself with Charlie Andrew, who previously collaborated with Alt-J and Marika Hackman. Most of the lyrics for the nine songs included in the tracklist were written by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s wife and his co-writer for years: among the songs in the setlist there is also a reinterpretation of “Between Two Points”, a song by the Montgolfier Brothers from 1999 which sees the participation of his twenty-two-year-old daughter Romany Gilmour on vocals and harp, and “The Piper’s Call”, which – together with the title track – includes parts performed by the late Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 in one of Gilmour’s home studios.
Accompanying the artist in the studio were Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert (on bass), Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao (on drums), Rob Gentry and Roger Eno (the latter, Brian’s younger brother, on keyboards) and Will Gardner (on backing vocals and string arrangements). The images on the physical formats of the album were signed by the famous photographer and director Anton Corbijn.
In addition to the digital version, “Luck and Strange” will also be available in physical format, including single-run deluxe editions that will include bonus tracks and a hardback book published by Thames & Hudson, with exclusive photographs taken by Polly Samson during the recording of the album. For the Italian market, the following formats will also be available: Bottle Glass Colored Clear Vinyl & Orange Crush Clear Vinyl (exclusively for Sony Music Store); Translucent Emerald Vinyl and Translucent Sea Blue Vinyl (exclusively for Discoteca Laziale); Silver Vinyl (exclusively for IBS.it and Feltrinelli.it); Matt White Vinyl and CD with alternative cover (exclusively for Amazon).
Gilmour will perform at the Circo Massimo in Rome on September 27, 28 and 29 and October 1, 2 and 3 accompanied by Guy Pratt on bass, Greg Phillinganes and Rob Gentry on keyboards, Adam Betts on drums, Ben Worsley on guitar, and Louise Marshall together with Hattie and Charley Webb on backing vocals.
